Falls Detection on the Umps Mobile Alarm – How It Works

Falls Detection on the Mobile Alarm

Introduction

Your Mobile Alarm can detect when you may have fallen and raise an alert automatically. This is called falls detection. It's designed as a safety net for situations where you might not be able to press the SOS button yourself.

How does falls detection work?

Your Mobile Alarm uses sensors to detect sudden movements and changes in height that may indicate a fall. If the alarm thinks you've fallen, it will vibrate and play a warning message:

"A fall has been detected. To stop the alert, press the red cross."

You then have about 15 seconds to cancel if it was a false alarm. If you don't cancel, the alarm will raise an alert automatically, just as if you had pressed the SOS button.

What happens after a fall is detected?

If you don't cancel, the alarm sends your alert and your location, then starts a call. With Professional Response, an operator will answer. With Family Response, your nominated contacts will be called and sent a text message with your location.

This means help can be sent to you even if you're away from home and can't describe where you are.

What if I get a false alarm?

Sometimes sudden movements like sitting down quickly, a sharp hand gesture, or dropping the alarm can trigger a false detection. This is normal.

If this happens, simply press the red cross or the SOS button to cancel within 15 seconds. If the call has already connected, just let the person on the line know it was a false alarm.

What if I'm getting too many false alarms?

If you're finding that falls detection triggers too often, you can adjust the sensitivity to better suit your activity level. If it continues to be a problem, see our guide on falls detection going off too often.

Can falls detection be turned off?

Yes. If you'd prefer not to use falls detection, we can turn it off for you. Just give us a call.

Will it detect every fall?

No. Falls detection is helpful, but it's not perfect. Some falls may not be detected, especially:

  • Gentle or slow falls, such as sliding down a wall
  • Falls from a sitting position
  • Falls where you land against furniture rather than the floor

We always recommend pressing the SOS button yourself if you're able to. Think of falls detection as a backup, not a replacement. If a fall wasn't detected, see why some falls aren't detected.

When is falls detection most useful?

Falls detection is especially helpful if you:

  • Sometimes feel dizzy or unsteady
  • Have fallen before and were unable to call for help
  • Live alone or spend time alone at home
  • Go out in the community on your own

Because your Mobile Alarm works anywhere with mobile coverage, falls detection can help whether you're at home, in the garden, or out and about.
